As a university student, Sophie Scholl became involved in the German Resistance movement during World War II. She was a member of the group, ‘The White Rose,’ and took part in a campaign to counter Nazi propaganda. This is a tragic, true story of bravery.

Wersba, Barbara. Whistle Me Home

When she meets him, she thinks that they are perfect for each other.

Woodson, Jacqueline. If You Come Softly

High school students Jeremiah and Ellie are considered an unlikely pair by everybody except themselves. This is a beautiful and sad love story set in Manhattan. (Behind You, is the sequel.)

Zevin, Gabrielle. Elsewhere

15-year-old Liz looks at life from the vantage point of an afterlife in which people age backwards from death to infancy in order to return to life on Earth.

Zuzak, Marcus. The Book Thief

Liesel finds that stealing books from those who do not respect them and then reading them to others helps to keep hope alive in her village in Nazi Germany during World War II. A fascinating novel told from Death’s point of view.

Almond, David. Clay

In this metaphysical tale, Davie, an altar boy in a small English town falls under the spell of a strange new kid, Stephen who creates a lifelike figure out of clay.

Anderson, M. T. The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation: Vol. 1, The Pox Party

This novel offers a view of the American Revolutionary War through an unusual lens. Octavian, a slave who is educated at a college and treated like a White person as part of an experiment, ultimately runs away to join the army.

Fleischman, Sid. Escape! The Story of the Great Houdini

As a magician, Fleischman brings a deep understanding to the life of the world’s greatest conjurer and escape artist. His personal comments and energetic pacing combine to create an engrossing biography.

Glatstein, Jacob. Emil and Karl

This tale, set in Vienna just before the outbreak of World War Two, tells the gripping story of friendship between two recently orphaned 10-year-old boys struggling to survive.

Murdock, Catherine Gilbert. Dairy Queen a Novel

Fifteen year old D. J. Schwenk narrates the story of her summer, doing chores on her family’s Wisconsin dairy farm, and coaching Brian, football star from the rival high school team. D. J., who has developed a crush on Brian, makes her school’s football team and has to face Brian out on the field.
