middle school summer reading

Welcome to Summer 2007 Reading!

Here are the Middle School requirements for summer reading:

Also, here are suggestions for pleasure reading during the months ahead.  Whether at home, at camp or at the beach, summer is a time to slow down and follow those interests that you don’t have enough time for during the school year.  Reading is one way to enjoy the slower pace.  Feel free to choose books that are of interest to you.  Reading is one way to learn more about new places, experience adventures or find new ways of seeing your own world.   We recommend that each student try to read at least one hour a day.  But how do you find books that will interest you?

For pleasure reading, here are a few tips:

Ask Friends - Asking friends to suggest books they liked can lead to some good conversations about what books are about and how they fit your tastes.  Also, you can borrow books from them and trade with them.

Choose Authors - If you know of an author whose book(s) you have enjoyed, you could choose another book by the same author.  You might also enjoy sequels to books in a series.

Follow Interests -  If you love sports, or horses, or computers, for example, you can pursue your personal interests by asking in libraries and bookstores for recommendations.

Select Types of Books - If you are a sci-fi fan, or if you love mysteries, romance, biography, or historical fiction you can look for titles under such categories in bookstores.  (In some libraries books are catalogued differently.)

Browse - Browsing in libraries, bookstores, and the bookshelves available to you can be very rewarding.  Make sure you ask in stores and libraries for advice if you need it.

Another way to find books that you may like is to use the lists linked below:

These books are easy to find, and we know people who have enjoyed them recently.  There are, of course, many, many books not on this list that are every bit as worthwhile.  We've also included a list of suggestions for books Middle School teachers have enjoyed.  If you choose one of these recommendations, in September you can let that teacher know how you liked it.

Whatever books you select, take delight reading them at your own pace when and where you choose.  And above all, have a wonderful summer.
