Data for Homework

Uniquely Formatted Workshop Statistics Data

Note: The authors of Workshop Statistics: Discovery with Data and the Graphing Calculator, Edition 3 provide data and programs on CD and the related publisher's web site. These data files are called group files but they are different than the ones provided here. BB&N provides the data formatted in a unique and particularly helpful way for many courses as described below. The files BB&N provide are also a type of group file but with very different features.

In the TI-83/4 data files available from this site, each data set is placed a separate program which is then stored in the group. Groups are like folders on a computer. Place the needed data program in active memory by first pressing MEM/8: Group/UNGROUP and selecting the appropriate group. When the program that was just ungrouped is run, the appropriate data is placed in named lists.

This method can provides significant advantages:

Using the group area of the calculator:

  • Allows for more data to be stored simultaneously, and
  • Allows the clearing of all unneeded lists, programs, and variables without the deletion of the groups or applications by selecting MEM/7: RESET/RAM/1: All RAM...

Storing data in programs:

As detailed in the article Efficient Storing Of Statistical Data In The TI-84 For AP Statistics, some of the advantages of this method are:

  • The only lists that appear in the Statistics List Editor are those for the particular activity.
  • Multiple data sets that contain a list with the same name can be maintained in the calculator without changing names.
  • Data can be reconstructed (without reloading from either a computer or another TI calculator) when data is altered either by mistake or through exploration.
  • The data usually uses less TI-83/4 memory when stored in programs than when stored in lists.
  • Note however, that the TI-83/4 TI Connect computer software does not allow viewing of grouped lists before downloading to the computer. (Groups must be ungrouped before viewing)

Notes on contents of files:

As of 8/31/08, in consulation with the authors in some cases, the following changes have been made to files available on the CD and publisher's web site. As of today, these files may or not may have been updated on any CD you may possess or the publisher's web site.

Data Files:

CLOSEFRIENDS - Not included. Not on CD. As on CD, data is in BUMPUS.
DIABETES - Data reformated to include AGE and TALLY where TALLY is Frequency to match instructions in WS/GC3.
DRAFTLOTTER - Not included due to size. Use data from CD or computer software.
NBAPOINTS -Not included. Not on CD. WS expects students to enter data on own.

Programs Files:

DOTPLOT - Upgraded by author due to problems with display of multiple dotplots
HEART - Included with its required data files in HEARTRA

Download:

Grouped program data files from Workshop Statistics, Edition 3 including the APP CTLGHLP:

Mac OS X - Safari is the recommended browser. Firefox/Gonzilla can create multiple and/or corrupt files.

Windows - Note: On some, if not all Windows systems, the uncompressed folder must be on your desktop to transfer more than one group file at a time.
