AP Statistics - Project 4

One Way Tables — Goodness of Fit

3/1/02

Your teacher received the following email from Roger W. Johnson, Department of Mathematics & Computer Science, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, Rapid City, SD through the apstats list server on September 3, 1996:

Sender: owner-apstat-l@cln.etc.bc.ca

To: apstat-l@etc.bc.ca

There was some earlier discussion about M&M color proportions. Here are the numbers as reported in a brochure sent to me by Mars, Inc. since the recent color change (i.e. introduction of blue):

Plain M&Ms: Brown 30%, Yellow 20%, Red 20%, Orange 10%, Green 10%, Blue 10%

You are to write a technical letter to The Director of Color Control, Mars, Inc. Hackettstown, NY 07840-1503, describing your study comparing the proportions of different colors in your 1.69 oz bag of plain M&Ms to the proportions sent to Mr. Johnson by Mars, Inc. You will either be complimenting The Director on a job apparently well done or seeking an explanation of why your sample differed. In either case, the goal is convince The Director that he should have faith in your study.

Format and Style

The report must have the following attributes:

• Written sections must be word processed.

• It may not be longer than two pages for any reason.

• The report should be two pages stapled together. No cover page or binder is allowed.

The Report

A. Analysis and Presentation

In an interesting and professional manner present your study so that The Director, an experienced statistician, will believe that you know what you are doing. A bar graph helping The Director to visualize what is happening is expected. This section of your reports may eventually be posted on our web site so make sure your style is appropriate for a world-wide audience.

B. Hand Computations

Impress The Director with a detailed presentation of a complete, full hand computation of the Chi-Square Test you performed and reported in the Section A. A table of "components of c2" for each cell should be included at the appropriate time in your computation.

Working with others

You may discuss any topic with other students. However, only you may collect the data, do the calculations, and write the report.
