Statistics.com will be offering two online courses, each lasting 3 weeks and particularly attuned to AP Stats teachers:

Introduction to Statistics 1AP: Sampling and Inference
OFFERED: June 08, 2012 to June 29, 2012
INSTRUCTOR: Dave Bock
GOAL: To provide an introduction to statistical inference for a single variable. Once you've completed this course you'll be able to apply statistically valid designs to basic studies, and test hypotheses regarding proportions and means. This course is especially suited to AP stats teachers who need to tune up their statistical skills. (For those with little or no prior exposure to basic probability and descriptive stats, statistics.com also offers a Survey of Statistics for Beginners during the weeks preceding IntroAP1.)
MORE INFO: http://www.statistics.com/intro1ap

Introduction to Statistics 2AP: Working with Bivariate Data
OFFERED: July 13, 2012 to August 03, 2012
INSTRUCTOR: Dave Bock
GOAL: To provide an introduction to statistical inference for two variables through a series of practical applications. Once you have completed this course you will be able to correctly analyze studies with paired data, and test hypotheses regarding a simple regression, a comparison of two proportions or two means, or a contingency table with count data.

Once again, Texas A&M University will be hosting an AP Statistics Summer Workshop that will be available both on campus (College Station, TX) and online (a.k.a. teleconferencing).  Both the on campus and online versions are endorsed by the College Board.  This year we are only hosting a workshop for experienced users (July 9-12).  So, if you have already taught AP Statistics for at least 3 years, this workshop is for you.  Josh Tabor will be our instructor.

The cost of the workshop is $475 for either on campus or online.  As a participant in our workshop you will receive a free copy of the latest editions of  TPS, POD, and BVD.  You will have access to digital copies of all Josh’s workshop materials, receive the College Board blue books, and have one year of access to the video recordings of the workshop (once the workshop ends and the recordings are edited and produced).  Please take a look at our website:

Arizona

June 18-21:  Tucson, AZ

For mixed audiences and certainly appropriate for those new to the AP Statistics course:

My goals for the mixed workshops are to review important topics from each of the four major content areas in AP Statistics (Exploring Data, Collecting Data, Probability, and Statistical Inference), provide activities that help illustrate these topics, and provide instruction and opportunities to use various types of technology, including graphing calculators and computer software.  Also, we will review the history of the AP Statistics program, discuss the creation of the AP Statistics exam, and review the scoring of the 2012 AP Statistics exam in great detail.  Finally, we will discuss how to start an AP Statistics program, how to select materials for use in class, how to recruit students, how to assess students, how to prepare students for the AP exam, and of course, anything else that participants want to know!

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks!

STATISTICS Special Topic: Using Simulations to Teach and Do Statistics
BOB HAYDEN & DAVID BOCK (July 15-20)

Simulations provide a powerful way for students to get a handle on abstract concepts. They are also useful tools for carrying out inference in contexts where the assumptions for formula-based procedures are not met. While these alternate techniques are not part of most introductory courses, they shed light on the logic of inference. In fact, several questions on recent AP exams have asked students to look at the results of simulations based on these techniques. We will start with hands-on physical simulations and then explore further using calculators, (free) software designed for simulations, and simulations using standard statistical software. Participants will have the opportunity to try all of these themselves.

TEACHING AP STATISTICS (new and experienced)
BRENDAN MURPHY (July 15-20)
DAVID BOCK (July 22-27 and July 29-Aug 3)

Our objectives are straightforward: to help you do a better job of teaching AP Statistics, and improve your students’ scores on the AP Exam.
** We’ll examine the College Board’s Outline of Topics and course philosophy, relating these to a clear discussion of expectations and strategies for the success on the Big Test.
** We’ll review and clarify important concepts in Statistics, and try to answer everyone’s questions about the subject matter.
** We’ll explore pedagogy, looking at sample lessons, classroom activities, elective demos, and possibilities for projects.
** And we’ll look at a variety of resources textbooks, calculators, videos, software, and other materials.

New to AP Stats or a veteran, you’ll come away with lots of valuable insights (and have fun, too)!
